Support for Homeless Students
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was created to ensure that children and youth experiencing homelessness have the same opportunity to be successful in school as their housed peers. Individuals and families who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence are considered to be experiencing homelessness by the McKinney-Vento Act.
You May Qualify...
If you live in any of these situations...
- In a shelter
- Park or campground
- Motel or hotel
- Car or on the street
- Abandoned building
- Living temporarily with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship.
- Inadequate living accommodations such as lack of water or electricity.
- Unaccompanied youth* experiencing any of the circumstances above.
You also have the right to...
- Enroll immediately and attend classes
- Get help with documents required for enrollment
- Remain in your current school
- Receive school meals
- Participate in school activities and programs
- The support of a Community Liaison.
- Appeal or dispute decisions made by the district regarding eligibility, school selection, or enrollment
You may be eligible for services, including...
- Transportation to and from school
- School supplies
- Academic support and tutoring
- Referrals for housing
- Health care
- Food
- Referrals for other services.
*Unaccompanied youth- youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or court-appointed guardian, such as runaways, youth who have been forced to leave their homes, or youth whose parents have left the area but left the student behind.
